Obituaries » James Larry Grimes

6As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.  2 Timothy 4: 6-8

James Larry Grimes was born December 15, 1947 in Pascagoula, Mississippi and died on March 26, 2017 after he battled pancreatic cancer over the past year.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Cecil Ann Grimes, father James Rufus Grimes, father-in-law Cecil Bourd Hateley and mother-in-law Agnes Delmas Hateley, and brothers-in-law Nathaniel “Than” Miller and Donald Kelly.

Larry is survived by and leaves to cherish the wonderful memories of his life to his devoted children Larra (Ronnie) Byrd, Lana (Matt) Brown of Pascagoula and Lance (April) Grimes and Lindi (Daniel) Delaughter of Vancleave.  He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild that he adored Lexi Byrd, Allie Byrd, Jackson Byrd, Gracie Grimes, Abagail Grimes, Molly Grimes, Kalen Brown, Matthew Brown, Emma Brown, Jon Daniel Delaughter and Vivian Delaughter and Avalyn Cecil May.  Larry was also survived by his mother Gladys Grimes, his sister Anita (Fred) Wallace and brother Bruce (Linda) Grimes and 5 sister-in-law’s Janelle Kelly, Vivian Mimm Bilbo, Carleen H. (Phillip, Sr.) Scott, Lana Kay Miller and Juanese (Ricky) Adams and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Larry was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi and graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1966 where he played football as a defensive player for the Panthers.  He then attended Perkinston Junior College where he continued to play defense for their football team.  As a lifelong resident of Jackson County, Larry worked as an electrician and was a member of the IBEW local union 903.  He traveled throughout the United States but the majority of his time (13 years) was spent in New York City which was his favorite of all the places he traveled.  He was always known as an extremely hard worker at his job or anything he did in life.

Larry loved his family tremendously and he was a dedicated husband, father and son.  He also worshiped his grandchildren and one of the most enjoyable stages to him was when they were babies.  Larry will be greatly missed by all who knew him but he is now reunited with his wife Cecil Ann and other family members he lost and that is a comfort to all of his family.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Moss Point, Mississippi with memorial service immediately following with Fr. Mike Kelleher officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in his honor to St. Jude’s Research www.shop.stjude.org.  The family would like to thank Dr. Randy Roth and Dr. Brian Persing and his staff at the Singing River Regional Cancer Center.  In addition, the family would like to thank the many families and friends who supported them during this most difficult time by taking time to visit, think about and pray for Larry.
