Obituaries » Jane Hill Flanagan

On February 3, 2017, Jane Armstrong Hill Flanagan left this world in the arms of her Lord and Savior, and was reunited with the love of life, her husband of sixty-two years. Born in Columbus, Georgia, her family then moved to Mobile, Alabama where she spent her formative years. Educated at Agnes Scott College in Georgia, she returned to Mobile where she met Jim Flanagan, who swept her off her feet. They married in 1953 and began their life on the campus of Ole Miss, and then settled in Pascagoula, Mississippi for the last 60 years. Although her career ambition was to be a pediatrician, four children later, her gift of nurture and care was poured out on her children. Her exuberance and leadership gifts were channelled into civic and education endeavors, which included being a founding member of the Junior Auxiliary of Jackson County, president of numerous civic organizations, P.T.A. president, and room mother at her children’s schools. She was an avid bridge player and a voracious reader of books. However, all her demonstrated gifts paled in comparison to who she was as a woman, wife, and a mother. Jane never met a stranger, was always quick to meet a need, extend a helping hand, and show grace to all. As a wife, she was without equal, devoted to her husband. Her life vocation, though, was her children. Not only did she instill in her children a love of learning that went beyond the classroom, she introduced them to music, art, and the love of books. For her children and grandchildren, she leaves a legacy to be passed down of a life defined by her consummate and unconditional love for her family, her selfless service to others, her belief in the power of prayer and her unwavering faith in God.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, James Hoover Flanagan; her parents Robert Alfred Hill and Derrille Armstrong Hill; her sister Ila Hill Hickey; her grandson, James Bennett Flanagan, Jr.

To carry on her legacy are her four children, James Bennett Flanagan (Myra Eason “Missy”) Flanagan, Jamie Flanagan Clark (Hays), Janet Flanagan Chappel (Dale), and Julia Derrille Flanagan; grandchildren, Megan Willis, Corey Willis, Anna Eason Harney (Kenneth), Mary Kathryn  Merrifield (Christopher), Robin Latham Flanagan, Mary Caroline Yancey (Patrick), William Hays Clark, Jr., James Lawrence Clark, John McGruder Clark; four great grandchildren, Michael Guy Harney, James Bennett Merrifield, Christopher Robin Merrifield, and Oliver Danger Merrifield.
“Her children arise and call her blessed…many women do noble things, but she surpassed them all.” Proverbs 31:28-29.

The family extends their heart-felt appreciation to Jane’s caretakers, Jessie, Betty and Vicky, all of whom kept her comfortable and content as she travelled this final journey.
A service in memory of her life will be held Sunday, February 12, 1:15 p.m. at Eastlawn United Methodist Church, 2502 Ingalls Avenue, Pascagoula, MS 39567.

In lieu of flowers, , the family requests that donations be made to the Ben Flanagan Freedom Scholarship Fund, DeSoto County Foundation for Excellence in Education, 316 W. Commerce St., Hernando, MS 38632, or to a charity of your choice.
