Rev. John Marvin Holyfield, 92, of Pascagoula, MS, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 in Pascagoula surrounded by his family. He was born on August 30, 1924, in Bude, MS to the late John Melvin Holyfield and Alice Lott. A veteran of World War II, John flew 35 missions at 19 years old as a nose gunner in B24. As honored as he was to serve his country, John’s greatest passion was serving his Lord. He was a true man of God, who preached his first sermon in 1948. He was a longtime member of Church of God on Chicot St. in Pascagoula. While serving as pastor of several churches during his life, he worked at International Paper; after he retired there, he went to work at Ocean Springs Hospital where he was employee of the year at age 80. Jesus and his family were his life and he lived showing his love by his actions. He never spoke badly of anyone and even those of us who may have messed up, he still never turned his back on us. He just spoke of forgiveness, of holding your head up, and to just keep going through the good and bad times, because our reward would be waiting for us when we crossed that finish line.

In addition to his parents, Rev. Holyfield was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Syble V. Holyfield; grandson, Jesse John “J.J.” Helms;  infant great-granddaughter, Olivia McIlrath; and several of his siblings.

He is survived by his children, Glorial Helms, Sylvia (Larry) Dees, and John W. Holyfield; grandchildren, Gayla Ann Harrell, Desiree’ (Shawn) McIlrath, Tonya (Smittie) Smith, Vincent John Holyfield, and Tina (Steven) Trehern; great-grandchildren, Savannah (Jeremy) Clarke, Jenny Harrell, Alison Helms, Kane and Reese McIlrath, Noah, Nathan, and Anderson Smith, and Kattie and Tommy Trehern; great-great-grandchildren, Bailey Clarke and Alyah, Danielle, David, and Elizabeth Myers; siblings, Romona Allen, Dan Holyfield, Marie Triplett, and Lee Nance; siblings, Romona Allen, Dan Holyfield, Marie Triplett, and Lee Nance; along with other family and friends.

The visitation will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa/Moss Point, MS. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Eugene Eubanks officiating. Interment will be held at Serene Memorial Gardens with Larry Dees, Shawn McIlrath, Jesse Helms, Mathew Dees, Jeremy Clarke, and Vincent Holyfield serving as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations be made to Rev. Holyfields home church in his memory. Donations to; Church of God, 2511 Chico St. Pascagoula, Ms 39581.
