Lezra “Pappy” Rogers, one of Moss Point’s oldest and most colorful citizens passed away in Pascagoula on Friday, February 17, 2017.  He was 101 years of age and missed his 102nd birthday by 35 days. Born March 24, 1915, to the union of Revs. John Burl and Edna Shepherd Rogers, he was one of seven children. His sole surviving sibling is his brother Arnold Rogers of Texas. Mr. Rogers has lived in the Moss Point community in which he was born for his entire life except for brief stints when he temporarily lived out of town while working construction.

He started school at Woods School in 1921, and entered Moss Point High School in 1928. Following high school, he went to work at the International Paper Mill, a Moss Point fixture for many years. From there he worked at Ingalls Shipbuilding, finally working construction until he retired.

He was a master plumber, serving several terms on the Moss Point Plumbing Board. During Mayor Louis Jackson’s administration he worked as building inspector for the city of Moss Point for six years. While in his 90’s, he filled in for the building inspector whenever the need arose.

Mr. Rogers was known to all as a man of “fixed opinions.” He was a regular at the Wal-Mart coffee shop where his family said he “held court” on a regular basis. For many years he, along with his friend the late Gene Stauter, maintained and watched over the historic Union Cemetery in Moss Point. He was a Master Mason for more than 60 years through Kevil Lodge 944 in Kevil, KY and Pascagoula Lodge 419 in Pascagoula.

As he said, “Just to prove I could,” he walked the Ocean Springs – Biloxi Bridge at age 95. On April 29, 2016, he was recognized by the city of Moss Point for his longevity as a citizen and  former city employee as part of Moss Point’s 115th anniversary as a city. Some of his happiest moments were attending Escatawpa Baptist Church with his family members.

With his parents, he is preceded in death by his five siblings; a son-in-law, Bill Farris; a great grand-son, Landon Farris Van Kanel; his three wives: Marie Bosarge Rogers, Francis Moody Rogers, and Marion Agent Rogers.

He is survived by his two daughters; Rose (Bill Bailey) Farris and Joyce (James) Miller; his grand children, Billy (Tiffany) Farris, Bobby Farris, Jeannie Farris (Dennis) Blades, Cindy Farris (Randy) Von Kanel, Robin DAngelo, Mike DAngelo, and Chip Breitenkamp; his great-grandchildren, Brian (Kelly) Blades, Cynthia Blades (Paul) Raybon, Randa Von Kanel (Josh)Gibson, Chase Farris, and MaKayla Farris; great-great grandchildren, Alyssa Blades, Luke Raybon, Lauren Raybon, and Clark Gibson; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services for Lezra Rogers will be on Thursday, February 23, 2017, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. and funeral service following at 11 a.m. All services will be held at Escatawpa Baptist Church, Hwy 613 in Escatawpa, MS. Officiating ministers will be: Bill Bailey, Robin DAngelo, Randy Von Kanel, James Miller and Todd Bowen with music by Mitch Osborne.

Burial will follow at Machpelah Cemetery in Pascagoula with Mr. Rogers’ grandsons serving as pallbearers. Heritage Funeral Home, locally owned and operated is in charge of arrangements.
