Maxine Russell Oppie, 86, of Moss Point, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017. She joins in heaven her beloved husband, Jack C. Oppie, a very special son, Jack A. Oppie, her parents Robert and Ruby Russell, and her sister Betty Tibbets.

After a full-time career of raising ten children was over, one of the greatest joys in Mrs. Oppie’s life was ringing bells for The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Project during the holiday season. Most people will remember her standing in front of local businesses seeking donations for the needy at Christmas. Mrs. Oppie devoted her life to many charitable endeavors. She never met a stranger.

Maxine is survived by nine children: Myrna (Walter) Boykin, Marita Friedman, Ernie (Becky) Hanson, Robert Hanson, Mark Oppie, Haidee (Lennie) Sheffield, John (Ginger) Oppie, Julia Kovalic, Pat (Vince) Oppie; seventeen grandchildren, Melissa Bond, Jason Boykin, Alexander Friedman, Shawn Oppie, Michael Oppie, Michelle Gist, Jack A. (John) Oppie, Jr., Daniel Oppie, Morgan Sheffield, Robin Millsap, Alyssia Gaiterio, Amanda Jolly, James Snodgrass, Andrew Snodgrass, Leah Kovalic, Carson Kovalic and Peter Kovalic; and a host of great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Oppie’s family is eternally grateful to Janie Hickson and each and every one of the staff at Sanctuary House in Moss Point, who cared for her as if she were their own Mother.

The visitation will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pascagoula on Saturday, April 1, at 10:00 am, with a funeral mass at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Griffin Cemetery, Moss Point. Pallbearers are Jason Boykin, Shawn Oppie, Michael Oppie, Daniel Oppie, Peter Kovalic, Dillon Jolly and honorary pallbearer Jack A. (John) Oppie, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Fund, 3217 Nathan Hale Ave., Pascagoula, MS 39567

Heritage Funeral Home, locally owned and operated, in Escatawpa/Moss Point, MS is in charge of arrangements.
