Obituaries » Melba Maxine Smith

Melba Maxine Smith, 87, of Moss Point, MS, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017, in Moss Point, MS. She was born on February 8, 1930 in Meridian, MS to the late Sadie and Emmitt C. Mitcham, Sr. She enjoyed playing the piano and began memorizing hymns as a child and could play many from memory. Maxine faithfully served the Lord playing the piano and organ for 11 churches in MS, NJ, and LA, beginning at age 18 until retiring in November 2016. Family Christmas gatherings meant standing around the piano singing carols as Maxine played for them. She also gave piano lessons and helped produce some notable professional students who became performers, educators, and composers. While she enjoyed classical piano music, hymns were always her first love, especially the hymn “He Keeps Me Singing”. She was a member of Ann O’Neil Chapter #37 and Vancleave Chapter #300 Order of the Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, James Dunn Smith; sisters, Nell Mitcham Ward and Marlene Mitcham Smith; granddaughter, Jo Ann Scardino; and son-in-law, Joseph Scardino.

She is survived by her children, James “Jim” (Mary Lou) Smith of Richardson, TX and Melba Scardino of Moss Point; grandchildren, Jason Scardino, Sr., Micah Smith, Melanie (Jeremy) Fore, Debra Jo (Josh) Sage, and Emily Smith; Angie Scardino; great-grandchildren, Jason Scardino, Jr., Maryssa Scardino, Isabella Scardino, Gabriella Scardino, Joanna Scardino, Jacob Fore, Anna Fore, and soon to arrive baby girl Sage; brother, Emmitt C. (Loretta) Mitcham, Jr.; sister, Jean Gentry; brother-in-law, Melvin E. Smith; sister-in-law, Ann Smith; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

The visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church SBC of Moss Point. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Serene Memorial Gardens in Moss Point, MS.
